Seven Bells: [ACTION/WRITTEN] Hat Day.

[Citizens of Luceti may see Archie Kennedy wandering around with a new hat today. It looks a little like something a magician would pull a rabbit out of, but he seems to be enjoying it. He'll be around town today--the library and grocery store during the day, and Good Spirits in the evening. In the afternoon, he'll sit at the fountain to pen a few words.]

I believe morale might improve if we had some sort of goodbye ceremony for those who were returned home. Not a funeral, mind you, just an occasion to remember them, celebrate their return, and hope to join them soon. Perhaps once a month or so, for everyone who left during the month. It's the little things that help one cope, sometimes.

Also, who left a note under my door? I'm afraid I can't read it, or indeed tell if it was even meant for me. I live in Building One, in the first flat on the first floor.

Could you teach someone?

I could try, at least, though I've never taught magic before. But since the barrier apparently reduces abilities, the range of the spell would be somewhat smaller.

That's all right. [He just wants to know what it's like, and if he can use it this summer while sailing with Jack.] Now, the nature of this magic is where does it come from?

Generally, magic is a potential you are born with, though that might vary from world to world. It tends to run in families. But it can appear in someone after decades, and most people have at least minimal traces of it. Since Libra is a basic spell, it would be one of the easiest learn.

It doesn't come from some sort of spirit?

It does not. However, there are some objects that can allow one to use or learn a single spell, with the advantage that absolutely everyone can use them.

That is very interesting indeed, Mr. Harvey.

I can keep an eye out for such an item in the shops, if you'd like. This way, you could have access to the spell even if my teaching is subpar.

That would be excellent. Thank you. [His Anglican side is still somewhat uncomfortable with this, but he'll see where it leads.]

If we're particularly lucky, it will be a ring, or a small dagger, instead of a broadsword.

That would be clumsy.

And terribly impratical, though it would admittedly be harder to lose.

I was. I used to be the Lord Captain of the Red Wings of Baron, though I've since left those duties.

Lord Captain? In my world, you would have had quite the social standing.

It is the same in my world, though it is due to chance more than anything else.

Chance?

I caught the eye of the right person at the right time, and was allowed opportunities beyond what should have been my station.

That is most fortunate, and an opportunity worth taking advantage of.

I did. I trained until I was talented enough with the sword to climb the ranks of the army, and I do my best to help the citizens of my country with that strength.

Sounds like you're the best kind of soldier, then.

I've had my less admirable moments. We all do at least once, I think.

If it's only once, you'd be particularly admirable.
