Seven Bells: [ACTION/WRITTEN] Hat Day.

[Citizens of Luceti may see Archie Kennedy wandering around with a new hat today. It looks a little like something a magician would pull a rabbit out of, but he seems to be enjoying it. He'll be around town today--the library and grocery store during the day, and Good Spirits in the evening. In the afternoon, he'll sit at the fountain to pen a few words.]

I believe morale might improve if we had some sort of goodbye ceremony for those who were returned home. Not a funeral, mind you, just an occasion to remember them, celebrate their return, and hope to join them soon. Perhaps once a month or so, for everyone who left during the month. It's the little things that help one cope, sometimes.

Also, who left a note under my door? I'm afraid I can't read it, or indeed tell if it was even meant for me. I live in Building One, in the first flat on the first floor.

I was. I used to be the Lord Captain of the Red Wings of Baron, though I've since left those duties.

Lord Captain? In my world, you would have had quite the social standing.

It is the same in my world, though it is due to chance more than anything else.

I caught the eye of the right person at the right time, and was allowed opportunities beyond what should have been my station.

That is most fortunate, and an opportunity worth taking advantage of.

I did. I trained until I was talented enough with the sword to climb the ranks of the army, and I do my best to help the citizens of my country with that strength.

I've had my less admirable moments. We all do at least once, I think.

As were we all. Such things don't matter here. The past is past.

Luckily. All of our worlds must have different laws; judging someone for their acts at home would be impossible, as no one would agree about the sentence or even the gravity of the crime.

I think there are some crimes we can all agree on, and if we do not, then we should reconsider our friendship with those who do not.

I do hope we can all agree on murder rape, theft and others, but what about theocracies, where not believing in the local deity is considered a crime?

I was not speaking of such things. To be frank, I'm surprised Luceti isn't plagued by more lawlessness than it has. It's as if most people, at least, know what is expected of them.

Well, you did say there are many powerful fighters here. Perhaps those with criminal tendencies fear retribution, in such an environment? That might be enough to convince some of them not to cause much trouble.

No. I don't believe fear of retribution alone would do it. It's never as powerful as the fear such people hold over those they've harmed.

Perhaps most of the villagers are naturally good people, then. That would be a comforting thought.

It would, but I wouldn't take the chance. Although it would make sense for the Malnosso to choose people who would naturally behave themselves.

It would mean less work and involvement on their part, and less repairs to the enclosure, as there would be little property damage.

Even the good things about this place have evil intent.

I'd rather not imagine what could be the intent behind the free supplies. Creating a dependence on the Malnosso, possibly?

They wouldn't want us to starve to death. It wouldn't be to their benefit.
