Four Bells: [Voice] Somewhat Unwell

Doctor McCoy?

[It's Kennedy, and he sounds awful. It's been a couple of days since he's left his room or contacted anyone over the journals.]

Are you in the clinic at the moment? Fever and aches aren't as much to my liking as I'd first thought. If I die before I make it there, please make sure Captain Jack stays out of my things until I return.

Who do you think I am?

[ he doesn't wait as his lips leaden and expression becomes hard. ] I'm a doctor, not a butcher.

I know. [Archie squints as it starts to process in his fevered brain.] You don't bleed patients anymore?

Of course we don't. Cutting people up.. damn barbaric.

[Archie stops holding out his arm and uses it to prop himself up better.] Then what do you do for a fever?

Have you started with drinking lots of fluids?

[There's a pause.] No.

Well, there's a good start. And lie down kid, you won't get any better popping up and down like a damn jack-in-the-box.

[He obeys, but doesn't look happy about it.] I've been lying down for two days, Doctor.

You could have called me sooner. [ he retorts quietly as he leaves his side and heads to the door. ]

[Kennedy sits up partway, confused.] Where are you going?

I'm getting you a drink. I'll be back in a minute.

[Archie lies back again, letting out his breath and closing his eyes. He feels like a bit of a fool, but he doesn't call out for the doctor again.]

[ good, because he won't come back as he closes the door quietly behind him and. . . well, McCoy forgot these damn apartments don't have their own kitchens, so he heads to the shared one on the first floor. all in all, he's back fairly soon with a glass of water for him. ]

[Archie is in no danger of sleep anymore now that he's awake and feeling every ache again. He sits up once more and slides back to prop himself up against the wall, leaning his pounding head back and reaching for the glass with a weak but heartfelt smile of gratitude.] Thank you.

[ he makes a noncommittal noise in reply. this isn't the first time this year that he's treated someone with a condition like this. ]

[Kennedy takes a few long sips, then hands the glass back. He doesn't have a night stand to set it on.] What comes next?

Well, you're over the worse of it. Now we just need to work on getting your strength back up -- plenty of fluids, bed rest and chicken soup.

I'm not hungry.

I don't care. You're going to eat.

[Kennedy sinks back into his pillow with a pained look.] Oh lord, why does it matter?

Nutrition is an important part of recovery, Kennedy. You can die on your own time if you want, but you revoked that right when you called me over here.

[Die? His fevered brain is fairly sure the doctor is exaggerating, but then again, quite a few men in his time died of symptoms no worse than what Archie has right now. But Archie is young and energetic, and that usually made the difference. Either way, he's not so energetic right now as to argue the point any further. He lies back and closes his eyes against his headache.] I thought you'd bleed me and be on your way. Not that I'm complaining about that. I'd rather choke down broth than have my wrists cut up.

Well, that's a relief to hear.

[He reaches out again for the glass.] That I'd rather eat than bleed? You have strange ideas about men of my time, Doctor.

[ he doesn't say anything, more preoccupied with helping the younger man drink. ]
