[It's Kennedy, and he sounds awful. It's been a couple of days since he's left his room or contacted anyone over the journals.]

Are you in the clinic at the moment? Fever and aches aren't as much to my liking as I'd first thought. If I die before I make it there, please make sure Captain Jack stays out of my things until I return.

[He tightens his grip on her hand just enough for it to feel solid.] I'm alive. I've got my good name back. Everything I couldn't have if I went back home, where I still could have died any moment of something unexpected. This is my second chance. That's something to be glad about.

[A tiny smile suggests he is actually starting to believe this.]

And your second chance comes with cheesecake, so I think you're going to be okay.

[ the second part is more important than the first; spend any amount of time with people from sunnydale and you find out they lead in with a joke and then comes the meaningful part. ]

I believe you're right. [He blinks slowly, a bit drained by the story exchange.] I'm glad I was able to meet you, lovely Dawn.

I'm right a lot. It's kind of my thing. [ this is probably where she should let go of his hand, but... okay, just a few more seconds. ] And I'm glad I got to meet you, Archie.

[He's in no hurry to let go, either, watching her face comfortably and trying to remember why he shouldn't bring up the possibility of courtship this very moment. Oh, that's right. Influenza. All the storytelling was distracting him from the miserable aches and fever, and they're not telling stories anymore. He closes his eyes against the light, resting his cheek against his pillow.]

[ dawn glances at her bag and then down at their hands, torn. ] You look like you're headed for Napsville, which is definitely a good idea. I could stay? In case you need something, after.

[McCoy was still here, but Dawn's presence was comforting.] Perhaps Dr. McCoy would appreciate the help. [He glances at the book he left on his top blanket.] A friend left that for me. It's about a boy who can't grow up.

[ dawn nods, because completely obviously the only reason she'd stay is to help. no other motives here, no sir. ] Oooh, Peter Pan?

You've read it! Don't tell me the ending.

[ dawn pantomimes zipping her lips and throwing away the key. ] There, my lips are sealed. Now you should nap before Dr. McCoy comes in here and yells at me for making you worse with emotional revelations hour.

I wouldn't want to get you into trouble. [He feels like he's being stabbed with knives everywhere, but sleep is overtaking him anyway. His grip on her hand loosens.]

Then go to sleep, doofus. [ dawn will just be sitting here for a second waffling before carefully placing archie's hand on the bed so once he actually falls asleep, it doesn't slip and wake him back up. ]

[It's very pleasant to fall asleep holding her hand, and he very nearly does so before she places his down on the bed. His eyes open momentarily, but the cool of her hand is still tingling on his palm, so he can still imagine. That's how he finally drifts off, his fingers curling lightly around the lingering coolness.]
