To anyone who is new, I would like to let you know that if, for any reason, you feel unsafe in your own home, you may go to the Welcome Center and ask to be placed with someone known to be safe until you are back on your feet. There does not have to be a reason--perhaps you were kidnapped recently or someone is threatening you. You do not need to tell why.

That said, I am in need of more women as volunteers. If any of you have a spare bed, your help would be most welcome. Even if you can be dispatched as a bodyguard, we would be glad of your assistance. A trusted member of the community must be able to vouch for you.

[Tonight Archie will be waiting tables at Cloud 9. When he gets off, he will take an unusually long time coming home. At some point, he'll be perched on one of the docks on the ocean, staring blankly out to sea, oblivious to the world.

There isn't really one specific reason. It's everything, really, from the draft to William's disappearance. Archie is as bottled as they come, and...

Bottles.

Around one in the morning, a gunshot and shattering glass is heard. This is because Mr. Kennedy has set up a line of empty bottles from the night club on the fountain and is using them for target practice. Wine, beer, as long as it's empty and glass it gets used. If you are having difficulty sleeping because you keep hearing gunshots and shattering glass every thirty-one seconds (gotta take time to reload), this may be why.

For housemates, he'll be at close to three in the morning, looking like he's gotten a little bit of something out of his system.

He will then, late at night, make a voice post.]

If anyone would like to play a game of whist during whatever you call your midday meal tomorrow, you would be welcome. I cannot vouch for my cooking, but I'll make a game attempt.

I'm all right. [It's not dismissive, just nonconfrontational. It's not a subject he really wants to speak of, and doesn't really know how to, out loud. He doesn't reload, but sets the pistol on the fountain to let it cool.] It isn't usual, but I thought I'd try a new thing, as they say is good for a man.

[The question was purposely left open; more for conversation rather than prying. At least it stopped the shots, which weren't very friendly when one had a headache.]

After a while it probably helps to develop a new hobby or two. Something to focus the mind on.

Though possibly not in the middle of town. [He gives her a brief smile.]

There are better places. I imagine there's quite a bit to clean up as well.

Too much is out in the woods, even during the day.

The sounds would likely draw unwarranted attention wherever you go.

At least here, someone might hear the horrible screams and, if I'm lucky, see my murderer running away.

[So morbid. Have some wryness:] That's not giving the would-be murderers enough credit. People just might get the wrong idea.

[He sighs.] I'm sick of worrying if I'm giving everyone the wrong idea. Everyone back home thought I was half-mad, why not here, as well?

[This is not necessarily true, but he doesn't know it. There's something that's always been soothing about Raine's presence, almost like she isn't entirely real and he's talking to a hallucination that won't repeat this to anyone.]

[She tilts her head slightly, though ends up wincing faintly at the motion. Headaches would do that. Regardless, her voice is a little more gentle at the next.]

I was only teasing, you know.

[He looks at her, surprised, then goes a little sheepish.]

I'm sorry.

[She shakes her head, but gives him a small smile.] It's all right. I suppose my reputation here would make it seem like I'm not able to.

I don't know very much about your reputation, but I think anyone is capable. Few enough would admit it, though.

You're probably right about that. In any case... perhaps next time you'll try a somewhat quieter hobby?

It isn't a hobby, but...no, I don't think I'll be doing this again.

I do appreciate it, at least. [As calm as she seems, her day really wasn't that stellar, either. She glances toward the night sky.] Hmm... the clouds haven't lifted very much. We might be in for some more rain tomorrow.

Perhaps it'll cool down. [He's really enjoyed the summer, but this one has been hotter than he's used to.]

It might, but there's also the humidity. Thankfully in here it doesn't seem to get too bad. [As opposed to that rainforest deal. Yuck.]

After arriving in the winter, I didn't think I'd wish it to cool down. Not as bad as the winters back home, is the odd thing, but the summers were cooler as well.

We're still right in the middle of it, I'm afraid. It won't start cooling properly until later next month.

[He sighs and sits on a non-glassy part of the fountain.] And shortly after I suspect I'll be wishing for summer again. Provided I'm around for it. [Flashing a tight smile.]

Perhaps so. [She shakes her head a little.] In any case, all you can do is wait it out. Have you been wearing lighter clothing? Learned to use the temperature control in your apartment? That might help.

The house, yes. But a man can't simply walk around undressed. [His definition of undressed is completely different from yours, Raine, don't be fooled.]

"Undressed"? [She'll raise an eyebrow slightly at the term.] The shops boast a surprising variety when it comes to lighter wear. Surely you'd be able to find something to your liking.

Oh, it's...it isn't...I feel very strange, running about in only trousers and a shirt. Undressed.
