Seventeen Bells: [WRITTEN/ACTION]

On July the 4th, 1776, one Horatio Hornblower was born in Kent. If you see him, bid him many happy returns. He will most likely grump about it all day and act ungrateful, but don't allow it to discourage you. He does appreciate it, he simply does not know it.

[For most of the day, Archie will be running around trying to furnish a bedroom in the house for a new housemate. He'll end up in the library, Good Spirits, the grocery store, then finally the Battle Dome, mostly staring in bewilderment at the controls before deciding this is too scary and leaving. At some point, he'll also take a walk in the woods, rain or no rain, in shirtsleeves and waistcoat but no coat. After a while, he'll get back on the journals.]

If you wanted to surprise someone dear to you, to cheer her up when she returned from being kidnapped, what would you do for her?

[William has only just emerged from his room, still a bit sleepy and hung over. It's that damned ale; he's never had anything have such an effect on him. That was potent, awful beautiful magic brew.]

[He catches Archie's post on his journal and smiles, slightly, and when Archie returns from one of his many errands, greets him with a slow wave and some coffee.]

Oh praise God, coffee. [Archie sets down bags of groceries and pours himself a mug. He's hung over himself, but he's also pretty used to functioning anyway when he has to, by now. The location of this house is much more convenient for errands, although there was something nice about the walk to CH1 that he'll miss.]

Oh, it is his birthday, isn't it? Well, many happy returns to him, I hope it's as cheerful as he can manage.

An excellent choice of words, Mrs Eaton. You should know Mr Bush arrived in Luceti only yesterday. I remember hearing you are an admirer of his.

[The best part about writing to others is the fact that you don't need to regulate your voice. Because, uh. Kay's excite.]

Is he. Well, congratulations to him — and to you. Must be nice to see a familiar face.

We went to Good Spirits last night and drank [a pause before the next word] everything. We got a cake for Horatio, and now I must remember what happened to it.

[ someone's back to work at the bar! perhaps you can stop and say hi, archie? ]

[rather cheerfully]

Oh good. You aren't dead.

[He will stop in, actually, looking like he and Bush shared a bottle of Romulan ale last night. He sits at the bar.]

Just a little glass of Scotch, dear one?

Not completely.

Sounds like a success all around — well, aside from losing the cake. Any clues to where it's gone?

Is Mr. Bush faring as well, or should I start planning eulogies?

I have to look for it. We might have left it there. We might have brought it home, in which case God alone knows what it looks like.

I think he had more Romulan ale than I did. Never combine Scotch and Romulan ale, Jilly.

[William is used to functioning come hell or high hangover himself, but he'll be damned if he does when he doesn't have to. So he got up precious late and made coffee the old fashioned way, because, cough, presumably House 35 has all the required fixings, cough cough.]

I see you've had a busy day. [William, quinting slightly, nods towards the bags at Archie's feet.]

Well, good luck. Suppose you could always buy another, if needs must.

No we can't, actually, but we can take one from the bakery without paying.

[Quit it, Archie.]

I'm afraid I didn't see Horatio around today, but feel free to pass along my best wishes for his birthday.

[A pause, before he adds.]

Food is generally appreciated.

[Hey, dudes called their friends things like that all the time back then. Even if those friends were other dudes.]

You are mistaken. It is the very first thing I need.

There are three of us now. I wanted to be sure everyone has enough to eat.

[He takes a long drink of coffee before setting the mug down and starting to put away groceries.]

What sort of food?

Depending on the state they return in? Any food.

But for certain people, I would specifically advise the bakery.

I can't help feeling bad about taking those cakes without leaving something in return; looks like they'd've taken a while to make. Not much to be done about that, though.
