[Archie woke up yesterday. How is this new? Well, after getting some fairly critical stab wounds from Grell, he was put on a ventilator and kept under sedation for a few days. The ventilator was exchanged for a less impressive-looking concentrator yesterday and he was taken off sedation. He spent yesterday sleeping anyway, since anesthesia doesn't generally leave you bright-eyed immediately afterward.

This morning, he is talking and eating Jell-o, which is a new experience. The most important bit comes written on the journal network in wobbly handwriting courtesy of the heart monitor clipped on his finger.]

I have been informed that I may have visitors. I'd like to know everyone is all right.

[Anyone who comes in will find him looking predictably weak and pale but lucid and in good spirits, or possibly catnapping after a dose of painkillers.

None of the magic they've shown us has been particularly demonic in nature. They're attached to the elements, and fairly easy to ignore if you haven't an interest in learning.

... Even the Malnosso don't seem to know much about them. Except for the last draft, we hadn't even been able to utilize their magic outside of the barrier. ... Of course, it may not be safe to do so given the Shift Hunters.

I don't think it is. The term "magic" is more of a blanket under which a lot of different examples fall. So they're not all the same source.

Spells for protection?

In what way? There's magic that can be used defensively, such as temporarily enhancing a person's strength, or making them a little less likely to be scraped up too badly during a fight. Though I have a feeling it's not quite what you're referring to.

Protecting a...a place, I suppose.

... ah, I see. I know a few people here who are capable of doing so, though it's not possible with my abilities.

I think I understand, a little. [But it's a lot to take in, and he's not sure how much of it he accepts. So he'll blink sleepily.]

When you're feeling better, maybe it'll make more sense. For now, it looks like you should probably get some more rest...

It was no trouble. Do you need anything before I go?

[He shakes his head.] Well. A new kidney, I suppose, might make the doctor let me out sooner, but if that's beyond your means, I'll try to understand.

I can't get you a new one, I'm afraid. The most I can do is accelerate the healing process... though with internal injuries, it's not quite as effective without proper rest to go along with it.

I was being...facetious, but... [He's trying to think if he wants her help.]

It's up to you, of course. [She had helped in the previous week already, but there was a considerable difference in the situation now.]

[He doesn't know about that. After a moment, he shakes his head.]

He's already made up his mind.

He probably would be cross with me, besides. Particularly considering his current disposition. [A small smile.] It wouldn't hurt to trust his recommendation and rest a while longer.

[A soft nod.] Well. Thank you for coming.

[She nods, and moves toward the door.] You're welcome. Take care of yourself now.

I've no other choice.
