Fifteen Bells: [ACTION/WRITTEN]

[Archie woke up yesterday. How is this new? Well, after getting some fairly critical stab wounds from Grell, he was put on a ventilator and kept under sedation for a few days. The ventilator was exchanged for a less impressive-looking concentrator yesterday and he was taken off sedation. He spent yesterday sleeping anyway, since anesthesia doesn't generally leave you bright-eyed immediately afterward.

This morning, he is talking and eating Jell-o, which is a new experience. The most important bit comes written on the journal network in wobbly handwriting courtesy of the heart monitor clipped on his finger.]

I have been informed that I may have visitors. I'd like to know everyone is all right.

Leaving a note to say you can receive visitors? At the very least, it draws some attention to the fact that something had happened. [But she's teasing, lightly.]

[You see, Raine, the memory of turning on the video of his journal, then laying his hand on it just before passing out? That just came back, and his already-pale face loses a little more color.]

Apparently I'm recovering quite well. I'm not sure whether to be proud, since I was asleep the entire week.

What's the difference, I wonder, between witchcraft and magic? I-I mean...you're not a witch. What you do is...different.

The definition of magic itself varies between worlds, so I know it can get confusing. Magic itself might be thought of as a broad term for explaining... what I suppose would seem inexplicable to others who aren't able to utilize it for themselves. So you'll find a lot of differences in any circumstance where it comes up. So differences in where it comes from, how it's utilized, what it can be used for... even in one to one comparisons you'll find them.

Is there something specific that you wanted to compare? Certain abilities, or what might seem like limitations?

[She realizes that in his condition, a lot of this isn't going to stick. But maybe enough will for a later conversation.]

Where I'm from, there's an energy that sustains the world, known as mana. The existence of elemental magic comes from there.

I see. That's...sort of what I thought magic would be like. But...when does it come from-from devils, evil spirits?

... Ah, I suppose the best answer to that is "when it does". There was magic like that in my world as well-- cursed weapons, forbidden books... the source being the demonic realm.

How can one tell the difference?

The sources itself are different. Those who can naturally sense the differences can immediately tell, but for ordinary humans unused to it, it might seem more confusing until they learn more about it.

What about the spirits here?

All of their magic is elemental. It might be easier to think of them as guides, since all they do is help you learn to draw the magic out from nature or yourself. Even so, there is a lot we don't know about them.

You're sure they're not...demons.

None of the magic they've shown us has been particularly demonic in nature. They're attached to the elements, and fairly easy to ignore if you haven't an interest in learning.

... Even the Malnosso don't seem to know much about them. Except for the last draft, we hadn't even been able to utilize their magic outside of the barrier. ... Of course, it may not be safe to do so given the Shift Hunters.
