It has come to my attention that every copy the library has of Richard III is missing bits of his famous speech. I've noticed it in other places as well. Romeo and Juliet is lacking the lines when she wakes up and they reunite before he remembers he took poison. All for Love is also just a bit different from what I remember. Far as I can tell, The London Merchant is whole, but quite a lot of older tragedies are missing bits and pieces. Can anyone explain this?

There's something about the fight between Tybalt and Mer

[The writing stops. A second later, the journal hits the floor, showing a lovely view of the carpet in one of the many apartments in the village. In the background, Archie's voice begins, sounding a little flustered.]

Horatio, I'll be back in a few hours. Damn, damn.

Archie? [The immediate confusion is quickly replaced with a concern that he tries to make sound less pressing than he felt it.] What is it? Where are you going?

[Archie's voice comes back, less frantic but still speaking quickly as some jangling is heard from picking up his sword.] Nothing. In trying to get you settled this week, I completely forgot to practice. I'll be out back, behind the building, wishing I was dead.

Ah, of course. The pirate. [A beat.] Shall I wait here, then?

[A pause.] I suppose two could practice.

If he'd prefer to deal with only one, I would be content to just watch. [Not that he's trying to put off the inevitable-- that sooner or later, he has to let Archie out of his sight for more than a few minutes. ...To distract from that idea, he chuckles.] Besides-- would be hard for two to practice when only one is armed. Perhaps once I have a sword again, you can teach me what he's taught you.

I don't have a lesson today, Horatio. We could stop by the weapons' shop and find you something more than suitable. [He sounds slightly wistful.]

[The thought of not yet having to deal with the pirate whose boat he borrowed? Perks him up.] I'd like that.

Very well, Mister Hornblower. I challenge you to a duel!

And, as a gentleman, I cannot refuse. I am afraid, Mr. Kennedy, that in a matter as serious as this-- [the smile on his face is betrayed by his tone] --there can, naturally, be no quarter given.

[What follows behind CH1 is two navy boys gleefully trying to chop each other up. It's more akin to horseplay than practice, but it appears that "the twins" are having fun, at least. Onlookers feel free to look on.

Later, Archie will do a little honest practice on his own in the same place.

OOC: Anyone whose character knows stuff about lit history can point out that a lot of older plays in the 18th century were rewritten just a little to update them for a "modern" audience.]

[Jack is not strangely jealous about this. No, not at all.]

[Archie doesn't like how Jack says "your Horatio" the way he says "your Dawn," but he brushes it aside until Jack makes a real suggestion.]

[You want power, he'll give you power. He'd rather not have Jack in a snit, anyway, and he gets a weird feeling that he's offended him somehow.]

[And he really isn't doing it for the power, although it had been fun to plague the young sailor with lots of repetitions. No, Jack is doing this as a weird sort of favor to the lad. He knows what it means to not be worthy in Buffy's eyes, and he's trying to ease that for Archie--at least as far as the anxiety of "WILL HE BE ABLE TO PROTECT DAWN OMG" front goes, reasonable or unreasonable though it might be.]

Eh, there's no need, I suppose. Do what you will, Kennedy. You've all the time in the world, eh?

[Because if Jack is worried about his unique position in Archie's life being usurped, he can never be completely right. Not when Horatio tempers Archie's chaotic good tendencies and Jack draws them out.]

[Due to his nature, Jack is hardly ever offended by people like Archie.]

The SWIM, Kennedy, was barely a quarter mile. So no, not adrift. Though I shall be making certain one of these days that this Hornblower makes that swim as he should have done in the first place.

God forbid you do the sensible thing and not moor your boat a quarter mile out to sea. God forbid you ever be faintly inconvenienced by even one new feather. If you'd asked him, he would have helped you catch the damn thing.

He took it just enough to provoke me, Kennedy.

[Continued calm in the face of the storm.]

He didn't do it to provoke you. If you like, I'll mention it to him and he'll apologize. He's the honorable sort.

[Who doesn't have the greatest impression of you, despite the significant number of times Archie has already defended you to him.]

He can apologize after he's made a swim of one quarter mile in the cold ocean. My final bargain in the matter.

I will present your offer and see if we can negotiate something. [He's not being serious. Horatio's not going to stoop to something like that, even if Jack is serious about it (though he might if Archie asked him really nicely, which he won't). It might be harder to maintain peace than Kennedy thought.] If you do meet him, at least try to be civil. I've already had to defend you to him several times, and I'd like for you not to undo my hard work.

[There is quite a snort at that suggestion.]

'Defend me to him'? DEFEND ME? He took my boat, Lieutenant. I'm not the one what's in need of defense, from the way I look at things. Not at all. Not even a wee little bit.

He didn't steal your boat, Jack, he brought it ashore. You've done far worse; if you haven't, you might reconsider calling yourself "pirate."

This, lad? This ain't about my piracy; it's about his. That's all I have to say on the matter, savvy? There's far too many of you official Navy types around now for my liking. You--this Hornblower fellow--Norrington. That don't settle too well with me.

[And with his death penalty? Flight across the sea will be nearly impossible for the pirate.]

I don't know who Norrington is, but you've nothing to fear from Horatio. I'm not part of the navy anymore.
