Three Bells: [WRITTEN] - New Horizons in Lit Appreciation

They have everything Shakespeare ever wrote in the library. Everything! It's a fountain of gold. I could spend days here. I'd sleep here if they'd let me. I don't think I've ever been happier. And there's no theatre group here? None? Do people here not realize what they have? What kind of a world is this?

In case anyone asks, I'll be in the library for the rest of my life.

[Or really just the rest of the day. At some point he'll have to come up for air and grab something to eat at the 7th Heaven, where he'll be buried in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It'll be dark before he goes home, carrying only a single book.]

[ McCoy harrumphs. ] No thanks needed, kid.

[He wasn't even sure which part the thanks was for: the offer to be his second, the friendly ear, or the reassuring presence. Either way...]

Bad bedside manner, right. I've heard it before.

This stuff is kicking in fast tonight.

[ he raises an eyebrow at the romulan ale. ah, avoidance. ]

[He only smiles, knowing he was heard. Horatio always hated hearing this sort of thing, too, as much as it secretly puffed him up. He takes a drink of the Scotch, exhales, and glances into his glass.]

If they can get books from other worlds, why can't they get whiskey from mine, I wonder?

I'm guessing it'll show up sooner or later. I doubt this place had any ale before me and Jim showed up.

Jim? Your captain-friend? [He props his chin on the heel of his hand and peers at his new friend.] He drank that? [Meaningful gesture of his eyes towards that glass.]

Either this or a budweiser classic.

How long did it take for all that to show up?

[He rather protectively takes another drink of whiskey.]

Honestly? No idea. Another resident slipped me a bottle when we were snowed in here for a few days last year.

Really? Any stories come of that?

I got into an argument with another villager about whether the whales were extinct or not. Had he been sober, I might have ended up with a sword run through my stomach.

Whales extinct?

[ a nod as he remembers that argument over the journals before a book ended up being destroyed. ] By my perspective? They're long gone.

We couldn't have hunted them that m--

[Then he thinks about how many whale bones are used in everyday clothing, and he ponders into his glass of whiskey.]

[ he shrugs and swirls the drink idly in his hand. ]

By the 21st century, they were all gone. What can you do? [ going back in time and bringing back two of them wasn't a viable option. . . yet. ] Did you hunt them, Kennedy?

No, I was in the navy. We hunted frogs. [This might be funny in his time and country, but then he remembers how much the term confused Jilly Coppercorn and the image of Horatio falling in love with an amphibian in a dress.]

[ McCoy turns to stare at him when he says that, thinking back to the two weeks he spent as an adolescent, scouring the riverbed for frogs to capture and looks back at his glass. he exhales through his teeth and wonders if he has had enough to drink. ]

... Well. Time well spent before mankind bettered themselves, I guess. [ frogs. can you even find frogs in the ocean? . . . wait. ] Are they a faction or some shit like that?

[He winces just a little.] The French, Doctor. They call it war.

... Oh, right.

[ a history buff McCoy is not. ]

It's all right. Last time I confused someone saying that, it was when I was telling her about how a man I knew fell in love with a frog.

[He finishes his glass of whiskey and sets it down on the bar without refilling.]

[ for some reason, that story provokes laughter from McCoy and he sniggers and tries to cover up his laughter by taking another swig from his glass. ]

Must have caused a controversy.

The story, or Horatio in love with the enemy? Because the story was surprisingly well-received. Jilly apparently thought it was the sort of frog that turns into royalty when kissed.
