Three Bells: [WRITTEN] - New Horizons in Lit Appreciation

They have everything Shakespeare ever wrote in the library. Everything! It's a fountain of gold. I could spend days here. I'd sleep here if they'd let me. I don't think I've ever been happier. And there's no theatre group here? None? Do people here not realize what they have? What kind of a world is this?

In case anyone asks, I'll be in the library for the rest of my life.

[Or really just the rest of the day. At some point he'll have to come up for air and grab something to eat at the 7th Heaven, where he'll be buried in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It'll be dark before he goes home, carrying only a single book.]

[He heaves a sigh.] You should've heard him, Doctor. He sounded like he wanted to murder me. I think I'm liable to get injured either way.

[ reaching for a glass of romulan ale because if he's going to get blitzed, he might as well do it well. ]

This is some trouble you've got yourself in. And to think, you've hardly been here for a month.

I haven't even been here a month. I think I must have... [He sees the Romulan ale and his eyes widen.] That's very bad for you, Doctor.

Medicinal purposes only, my ass. [ gets them every time as he pours the blue liquid into a glass from the bottle. ] Things'll settle down sooner or later. He'll get bored and head out to the ocean.

[He keeps watching as he pours the beverage.]

I certainly hope he does so before killing me. You know, that innocent-looking drink made me propose to a girl.

He's not going to kill you; I'll step in before both of you try and slice each other up. And I don't know whose sense of humour it was up there to supply this drink, but I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

[ he pauses and raises an eyebrow. ] A girl, huh? Did she say yes?

You may want to stay out of the way, actually, Sharp blades, you know.

...Come to think of it, I believe I only threatened to propose marriage. I think her only promise was that her sister wouldn't kill me if I did.

[ he takes a sip of romulan ale and his face scrunches up as the drink burns down the back of his throat. ] No, really? Here I was thinking you'd use fish instead.

[ a short laugh as he considers that. ] Rack those death threats up, kid.

[That gets him a sardonic look.] I think Buffy will understand about the drunk bit. She and I got on well when we spoke. She's one of your housemates, isn't she?

One of them, yeah [ he had heard the Dawn had arrived, but had not found a chance to speak to her yet. ] You picked the wrong girl to try and woo, Kennedy. Summers is fiercely protective.

I'm not trying to woo Dawn, Doctor. Did I mention I was drunk?

[He decides not to ask if Dawn is pretty, then.]

You did, but I'll warn you anyway.

Saving my life twice in one week, are you?

Maybe. Just try to not make this a weekly occurrence. I don't like to leave the house when the weather is like this.

I'll be sure to take note of that in the future when I plan further attempts on my own life.

[He takes a swallow of Scotch and exhales softly.]

Har-har.

[ he laughs sarcastically into his glass. ]

[He smiles tightly, takes another drink, and takes a deep breath.] Thank you.

[ McCoy harrumphs. ] No thanks needed, kid.

[He wasn't even sure which part the thanks was for: the offer to be his second, the friendly ear, or the reassuring presence. Either way...]

You're not very much like any doctor I've ever known. You're sort of...

[A real person?]

[ finish it, kid. ]

Bad bedside manner, right. I've heard it before.

Nonono. A good man.

This stuff is kicking in fast tonight.

[ he raises an eyebrow at the romulan ale. ah, avoidance. ]

[He only smiles, knowing he was heard. Horatio always hated hearing this sort of thing, too, as much as it secretly puffed him up. He takes a drink of the Scotch, exhales, and glances into his glass.]

If they can get books from other worlds, why can't they get whiskey from mine, I wonder?

I'm guessing it'll show up sooner or later. I doubt this place had any ale before me and Jim showed up.

Jim? Your captain-friend? [He props his chin on the heel of his hand and peers at his new friend.] He drank that? [Meaningful gesture of his eyes towards that glass.]
